Host Hungary finished first in the medal table with nine gold, ten silver, and seven bronze medals and celebrated two back-to-back twin triumphs on the final day of the 31st European Swimming Championships in Debrecen.
First Katinka Hosszu (2:07.28min) and Zsuzsanna Jakabos (2:07.86) came first and second in the women’s 200m butterfly, then Laszlo Cseh (4:12.17) and David Verraszto (4:14.23) repeated this feat in the men’s 400m individual medley.
Germany and France both also ended the Continental Championships with titles on the last day. Britta Steffen (24.37sec) in the women’s 50m freestyle and the women’s 4x100m medley relay team (3:58.43) added gold medals number 7 and 8 to the medal tally of the hosts of the next European Long Course Swimming Championships in 2014 in Berlin; Coralie Balmy (4:05.31) in the 400m freestyle and Frederick Bousquet (21.80) in the 50m free were successful for France.
Petra Chocova (31.25) achieved the Czech Republic’s first gold medal in the women’s 50m breaststroke in Debrecen; Italy’s 4x100m medley relay team (3:32.80) won the 40th and last gold of the Championships. The Italians also won the general points classification of the event and Chiara Boggiatto and Filippo Magnini received and lifted the Championships Trophy in representation of their entire team and to the delight of them all.
